Wall Street funds are actively accumulating decentralized AI compute tokens, recognizing a strategic play in crypto's AI sector. Bittensor (TAO) saw a 28 percent increase in active wallets during Q1 2026, reaching 18,500 unique addresses. This marks new user adoption, outpacing the broader crypto market's four percent wallet expansion over the same period.

On-chain data confirms large wallet activity. Addresses holding over $1 million in TAO rose 15 percent over the last month, adding 80 new whales. These institutional-sized wallets now control 62 percent of Bittensor's circulating supply, up from 58 percent in Feb. indicating strong conviction from major holders. The top 100 wallets added 1.2 million TAO tokens in April alone, reducing available market supply.

The Bittensor protocol's subnet registrations grew 12 percent in April, with 15 new machine learning subnets launching across various AI research domains. This signals increased developer interest in decentralized machine learning models and data marketplaces, moving beyond centralized cloud providers. The rising utility drives demand for TAO as a core compute resource and staking mechanism for subnet validators, locking up supply.

Traditional finance is extending its reach beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, directly targeting crypto projects with real-world applications. Institutional investment vehicles, including Grayscale's Digital Large Cap Fund, have increased their exposure to AI-focused crypto assets by 1.2 percent in Q2. This targeted allocation, alongside private fund investments from firms like Pantera Capital and a $50 million raise by a new AI-focused hedge fund in May, reflects a strategic shift to capture the AI growth narrative within digital assets.

The interest stems from the broader AI boom, where demand for computational power continues to outstrip supply. Decentralized networks offer a cost-effective and censorship-resistant alternative to traditional GPU farms owned by tech giants. This narrative resonates with investors seeking exposure to AI infrastructure without direct equity in hyperscalers.

Bitcoin trades at $78,693, down 1.3 percent today, during a broader market downturn that saw the Nasdaq fall 1.8 percent and the Russell 2000 drop 2.3 percent. Despite this risk-off environment, AI tokens show relative strength, with several gaining five to seven percent in the last 24 hours. This divergence highlights targeted capital flows into high-conviction crypto sectors.
