Aave's Wrapped Ethereum (WETH) markets have returned to normal operations, signaling a de-escalation of risk surrounding the liquid restaking token rsETH. The lending protocol faced intense pressure last week as rsETH depegged, trading as low as 0.95 ETH for a sustained 72-hour period. This created substantial liquidation risks for users who had deposited rsETH as collateral, directly impacting over $200 million in WETH liquidity within Aave's pools.
The recovery of rsETH to 0.98 ETH against its peg drove the market stabilization. On-chain data from major decentralized exchanges shows a concerted effort by large rsETH holders, including several EigenLayer restakers, to re-establish liquidity. A single wallet identified as '0xRestakeWhale' deposited 12,000 ETH into the rsETH/ETH Curve pool on May 16, injecting approximately $25 million in liquidity and re-anchoring the token's value.
Aave's V3 WETH market utilization rate, which fell from 85 percent to 65 percent during the depeg, now registers 78 percent, indicating renewed confidence in borrowing and lending activity. This stabilization protects approximately $1.5 billion in total value locked within Aave's WETH pools. The protocol's automated risk engine adjusted liquidation thresholds for rsETH positions, preventing a broader cascade and protecting borrower solvency.
This incident highlights the systemic risks inherent in composable DeFi architectures, particularly with new liquid restaking token primitives. Aave's decisive response, including a governance proposal to pause additional rsETH collateral deposits, limited the protocol's exposure to the depeg event. This proactive measure prevented a larger bad debt scenario and validated Aave's risk management framework under stress.
The broader crypto market today shows caution, with Bitcoin trading at $76,880, down 1.5 percent over 24 hours. Ethereum sits at $2,118, a three percent drop, reflecting general market softness across altcoins. Aave's ability to absorb the rsETH stress test and restore market functionality provides a localized signal of protocol resilience, even as wider digital asset markets consolidate.
