SÃO PAULO — Over 300 Brazilian cattle ranchers have secured more than $120 million in loans this year by tokenizing their livestock, connecting directly with liquidity pools on decentralized finance protocols and bypassing traditional banking.

The total value of tokenized cattle collateral has risen 45 percent since April, with rapid adoption across key agricultural regions including Mato Grosso and Goiás. That capital is flowing into pre-harvest investments that ranchers previously couldn't access.

These cattle tokens—primarily non-fungible tokens representing individual animals or specific herds—serve as verifiable collateral for on-chain loans. Each token embeds unique identifiers, health records and ownership details recorded on a public blockchain, reducing fraud and giving lenders and auditors a transparent view of the underlying asset.

AgriChain Labs, a São Paulo-based blockchain firm, facilitates the tokenization process. The company partners with local veterinarians and independent auditors to verify cattle existence, health and market value before minting tokens on the Polygon network. On-chain data shows AgriChain Labs has minted over 50,000 cattle NFTs since Jan. 1, locking up assets valued at over $185 million and supporting an average loan-to-value ratio of 65 percent across its lending pools.

Traditional Brazilian banks frequently reject loan applications from small and medium-sized farms, citing collateral requirements, slow processing and limited reach into remote agricultural areas. DeFi lending cuts approval times to within 48 hours of tokenization. Farmers using these protocols pay an average interest rate of 8.5 percent annually—competitive against local microfinance options that often exceed 12 percent.

The faster capital access lets farmers buy feed, expand herds and upgrade equipment. Maria Silva, a rancher from Mato Grosso, used a $75,000 tokenized cattle loan to purchase advanced irrigation technology, projecting a 15 percent increase in pasture yield this season and a 20 percent reduction in water consumption.

The success of tokenized livestock in Brazil marks a concrete advance for real-world asset tokenization, moving beyond theory to measurable economic impact. Institutions are now studying this model for potential expansion into commercial real estate, forestry and other agricultural commodities. Collateralizing productive physical assets directly on-chain streamlines credit access for rural populations that traditional financial systems consistently underserve.
