SpaceX launched 23 Starlink V3 satellites into low-Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, but the Falcon 9 first stage booster failed to land on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas.
The booster, designated B1080, was on its fifth flight. Its loss adds an estimated $60 million to $70 million in replacement costs, based on industry estimates for Falcon 9 first stages. This is the third Falcon 9 booster loss in 2026.
SpaceX's unit economics depend on booster reusability. Falcon 9 first stages are designed for 15 to 20 flights, and each loss compresses the number of missions over which development costs are amortized, cutting into overall margins.
The V3 satellites offer higher throughput, which lowers the per-bit delivery cost—a critical metric as Starlink competes against fiber and terrestrial 5G. Amazon's Project Kuiper and OneWeb are building rival constellations.
Each successful V3 deployment expands Starlink's revenue potential, but at three booster losses this year, replacement costs are eroding the capital efficiency of the constellation buildout.
