The S&P 500 rose 8 percent through 2026, but that headline gain obscured severe damage beneath the surface: the index's 10 worst-performing components each lost more than 40 percent of their value.
AI disruption fears were the primary catalyst. Companies perceived as vulnerable to automation or AI-driven efficiency gains faced rapid revaluation, with Wall Street analysts downgrading firms across legacy software, content creation platforms and service-oriented businesses, citing long-term margin compression and market share erosion from AI-native competitors.
Not every decline traced back to AI. Several companies faced sector-specific headwinds, new competition from non-AI entrants or company-specific operational failures. Rising interest rates earlier in 2026 also pressured valuations for growth-dependent businesses.
The broader market showed mixed performance. The S&P 500 traded at 7,412, flat on the day. The Nasdaq fell 0.6 percent to 24,976, while the Russell 2000 dropped 0.3 percent to 2,930, reflecting investors' continued preference for resilient business models.
