The buyback program, filed with the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, authorizes the repurchase of outstanding shares over a specified period. Reducing the share count mechanically lifts earnings per share—a signal that management views the current valuation as too low relative to operational results.
CATL reported strong first-half earnings driven by consistent global demand for electric vehicle batteries. The results demonstrate the company's ability to hold margins through shifting cost conditions.
The company commanded approximately 37 percent of the global EV battery market in the first quarter, according to SNE Research data. That position gives CATL leverage in supply chain negotiations and pricing that smaller rivals cannot match.
CATL supplies batteries to Tesla, Nio, Xpeng, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Its lithium iron phosphate cells continue to see high adoption across EV segments, from mass-market sedans to commercial vehicles.
The competitive environment remains demanding. LG Energy Solution, Panasonic and BYD are expanding production capacity and accelerating product development. BYD's integrated battery and vehicle manufacturing gives it a structural cost advantage that CATL must account for in pricing.
Raw material costs remain a persistent risk. Lithium, nickel and cobalt prices can compress margins quickly. CATL has addressed this through long-term supply agreements and direct investment in upstream mining operations.
The global EV market is expanding but unevenly. Demand growth is moderating in some regions, which could soften future battery orders. CATL is expanding into Europe and North America to diversify revenue and reduce exposure to any single market.
Investment in new chemistries, including sodium-ion batteries, and charging infrastructure remains central to CATL's effort to stay ahead of rivals as energy storage requirements evolve.
