NEW YORK — JPMorgan's proprietary quantitative model has triggered a buy signal for the S&P 500, a rare activation the firm's equity strategy team says has historically preceded periods of market appreciation.
The signal appears only a few times annually. Its selectivity is central to its significance: JPMorgan's internal analysis shows a strong correlation between prior activations and subsequent equity gains, with the model designed to identify inflection points for tactical allocations.
The S&P 500 trades at $7,413, unchanged on the day, following a 0.8 percent decline over the past week. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.2 percent to $24,932, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5 percent to $52,210. NVDA dropped 5.0 percent to $196.51, contrasting with Microsoft's 1.9 percent gain to $389.10. A broad S&P 500 rally typically requires wider participation across sectors and market-capitalization ranges.
JPMorgan does not publicly disclose the model's components, but comparable tools typically integrate market breadth, investor positioning and valuation metrics. A positive shift in those inputs likely drove the buy recommendation.
The signal faces a difficult macro backdrop. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said rate cuts are "not appropriate" until inflation shows sustained progress toward 2 percent. Core PCE has held above 2.8 percent for three consecutive months. Higher-for-longer rates pressure corporate earnings and compress discounted cash flow valuations, requiring companies to deliver strong results to justify current multiples.
