SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants opened their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 4-0 win Monday, and Logan Webb was the story from first pitch to last.
Webb was locked in. He worked seven scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. His fastball command and changeup kept Dodgers hitters off balance all night — and when you're talking about a lineup that includes Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani, keeping them hitless through seven is not a small thing. That's a performance.
The Giants gave Webb something to work with early. Thairo Estrada launched a solo home run in the third inning — his 15th of the season — to put San Francisco up 1-0. The lead grew in the fifth when Wilmer Flores hit an RBI double to score LaMonte Wade Jr. then Patrick Bailey followed with an RBI single to push it to 3-0. Wade Jr. added insurance in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, scoring Estrada again. Nine hits total, three of them extra-base hits. The offense did its job.
The bullpen closed it cleanly. Camilo Doval worked a scoreless eighth with a strikeout, and Tyler Rogers handled the ninth without issue to lock up the shutout.
The win moves San Francisco to 52-48, keeping them in the National League Wild Card picture. The Dodgers drop to 60-40 and now face real questions about how their offense — one of the most dangerous in baseball — got completely neutralized by a guy who simply located his pitches and trusted his stuff.
