SAN FRANCISCO — Apple will charge for certain artificial intelligence features through its iCloud service, CEO Tim Cook said, integrating advanced AI capabilities into the company's established subscription ecosystem.
A portion of Apple's future AI offerings—particularly those requiring significant cloud compute—will move behind a paywall. The approach converts AI development costs into recurring revenue, building on Apple's services division.
Apple's services segment generated $85.2 billion in revenue during fiscal year 2025, representing 24 percent of the company's total sales. iCloud subscriptions form a key component of that growth, with over 1 billion paying subscribers globally.
The move puts Apple alongside competitors already monetizing AI. Microsoft charges $20 per user per month for its Copilot Pro subscription, offering advanced AI features within its Office suite. Google provides AI add-ons for its Workspace products at similar premium rates.
Apple's AI strategy is expected to be hybrid. Basic on-device AI functions, powered by Apple's neural engines, will likely remain free. More powerful, cloud-dependent capabilities—such as an enhanced Siri AI—will require an iCloud subscription.
The pricing model deepens Apple's ecosystem lock-in. Bundling advanced AI with iCloud increases user reliance on its proprietary services, making it harder for customers to switch to rival platforms. Apple's active device base exceeds 2 billion units.
User willingness to pay remains a key variable. Apple customers have shown tolerance for premium service pricing within the ecosystem, but moving core AI functionality to a paid tier could test that loyalty. The company will need to draw a clear line between free and paid AI offerings.
For a stock currently trading at 28 times forward earnings, the iCloud AI charge signals a defined path to AI monetization. Apple shares closed at $333.43, down 1.4 percent, as broader market caution weighed on tech stocks.
Apple has not disclosed pricing tiers or the exact scope of paid AI capabilities. The upcoming Siri AI launch will provide the first concrete details on which features will be tied to iCloud subscriptions.
