TOKYO — The Bank of Japan held its short-term interest rate target at 1 percent, a decision widely anticipated by global markets. The move extends the yen's role as a low-cost funding currency for carry trades worldwide. Traders borrow cheap yen to buy higher-yielding assets, including digital assets across multiple blockchain networks. The policy divergence between Japan and other major economies remains a key driver of global liquidity.

On-chain data tells the real story: $800 million moved from centralized exchanges to DeFi lending pools in the past 12 hours. That capital is chasing yield, much of it funded by cheap yen borrowing. Nansen data shows a sharp rise in stablecoin deposits on Aave and Compound, reflecting renewed demand for borrowing against crypto collateral. That liquidity inflow builds the base for leveraged positions across decentralized finance.

Bitcoin traded at $66,050, up from earlier lows. Ethereum rose to $3,210. The carry trade environment keeps a consistent bid under risk assets, compressing short-term volatility and supporting price floors. Funding rates for BTC and ETH perpetuals on major exchanges remain positive—long positions dominate. Traders are paying a premium to hold those longs, which signals confidence in continued upside.

The rate differential gives institutions access to cheap capital for yield farming and arbitrage across blockchain networks. That dynamic pushes money into less liquid altcoins, lifting their market caps. The U.S. dollar index held steady at 104.5, with limited immediate impact on major currency pairs, but the yen at 158.2 against the dollar keeps it the most attractive borrowing instrument available. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index sits at 25—Extreme Fear—yet these capital flows point to real conviction among sophisticated players who are actively deploying.

The Bank of Japan's next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for Sept. 19-20. Any signal from Governor Kazuo Ueda of future rate hikes could unwind carry positions fast, pulling liquidity out of DeFi and triggering rapid deleveraging across digital asset markets.
