Tokenized gold proved resilient during a recent market sell-off, according to a RedStone report published July 30. Despite that stability, only $63 million of the asset is currently deployed as collateral across DeFi lending protocols.

The limited on-chain integration comes as demand for tokenized gold surged. Physical bullion prices climbed to record highs, pushing tokenized gold spot trading volume to $90.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Gold futures rallied above $5,600 per troy ounce during that period. RedStone's analysis found tokenized representations of the asset maintained their peg and liquidity even as the underlying commodity experienced sharp price movements.

The $63 million deployed as collateral represents less than 2 percent of the total tokenized gold market—a wide gap between the asset's market growth and its functional use within DeFi's capital efficiency stack.

Tokenized Treasuries offer a useful comparison. Protocols such as Ondo Finance and BlackRock's BUIDL have driven rapid integration, with on-chain Treasury TVL now above $2 billion and yields near 4.2 percent. Gold's path into DeFi has been slower.

Several structural factors constrain adoption. Many lending protocols still prioritize highly liquid native crypto assets that are easier to liquidate under stress. Integrating tokenized gold would require deeper liquidity pools, new risk parameters and robust oracle feeds—the kind of infrastructure RedStone specializes in—before platforms like Aave or Compound would realistically onboard it as collateral.

Broader collateral acceptance could unlock yield for holders who currently use tokenized gold purely as a store of value or for spot trading, allowing them to borrow against positions without selling. The asset's demonstrated peg stability during volatility gives lending protocols a concrete data point to work from when modeling liquidation risk.
