The Houston Texans have finalized a one-year contract with free agent edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, bringing back the former No. 1 overall pick to the franchise that drafted him in 2014.
The deal carries a base value of $5.5 million and can reach a maximum of $8 million, according to KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson.
Clowney's return adds depth to a Texans pass rush already regarded as one of the NFL's strongest units. The three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher has accumulated $99.5 million in career earnings, making his $5.5 million base a reflection of a changed market.
Houston selected Clowney with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He spent his first several seasons with the Texans before the organization applied the franchise tag to him in July 2019. He was subsequently traded to the Seattle Seahawks in a deal that sent a 2020 third-round draft pick, pass rusher Barkevious Mingo and linebacker Jacob Martin to Houston.
NFL training camps are currently underway, with all 32 teams having reported. The one-year structure of the deal gives both Clowney and the Texans flexibility heading into the season.
