Yield Guild Games (YGG) shuttered its web3 game publishing division, YGG Play, on Friday, Aug. 2. The closure cuts 35 jobs as the guild redirects its $20.6 million treasury toward the AI data economy. Co-founder Gabby Dizon confirmed the shutdown, saying YGG Play services had ceased operations.

Dizon first announced the sunsetting of the publishing unit on July 6, outlining a phased withdrawal. The YGG Play platform and specific web3 game titles including LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper remained accessible until July 31, when all associated services went offline. The full operational transition completed Aug. 1.

YGG will now concentrate resources on generating behavioral data for AI labs, building a B2B pipeline around gaming datasets. The guild is stepping away from its previous core activity of farming yield from in-game assets.

YGG's Q1 2026 financial disclosures showed a treasury of $20.6 million, including $6.2 million held in stablecoins, U.S. Treasury bills and large-cap tokens. Closing the unprofitable YGG Play unit extends the guild's operating runway to four years, according to its internal financial assessments.

Management attributed the closure to adverse market conditions, saying it was not a reflection of product performance. YGG cited the Oct. 10, 2025 liquidation cascade as a primary catalyst, followed by a sustained market downturn that made the publishing unit commercially unviable.

YGG said it does not expect a sufficient recovery in the crypto consumer market or the web3 games publishing market in the near term, calling the closure a "market decision, not a product decision," according to Dizon.

The guild said "the realities of the broader macroeconomic climate mean that this unit is no longer commercially sustainable." YGG Play had generated over $9 million in lifetime revenue by the close of Q1 2026.

The YGG token traded near $0.0178 on Friday, up 1.77 percent over the preceding 24 hours but down 1.68 percent on the week. Its circulating market cap stands at $14.17 million, with a fully diluted valuation of $17.79 million—down 99.8 percent from its all-time high in November 2021.

The shutdown covers the YGGPlay.fun website, its Launchpad, YGG Play's social accounts and Community Questing services at community.yggplay.fun. YGG has also ceased all marketing support for third-party games previously under the YGG Play umbrella.

The 35 departing staff members received eight additional weeks of pay. Two titles will continue independent operations: Delabs Games will maintain live services for GIGACHADBAT, and Planetarium Labs will continue supporting Ragnarok Breaker.

Dizon said the core guild remains intact and that the "Yield Guild story continues," with further details expected in the coming days.
