LANSING, Mich. — William Lawrence, a progressive activist and co-founder of the climate group Sunrise Movement, won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 7th Congressional District, setting up a general election fight against Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in one of the country's most competitive House races.
The 7th District is a tight swing seat whose November outcome will help determine control of the House.
Lawrence, 35, defeated two prominent moderate rivals in the primary: former U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink and ex-Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. His win consolidated the progressive vote in a three-way contest and immediately exposed a fault line in the Democratic Party, with moderate strategists questioning whether a progressive can hold a battleground district.
Steven Ellinger, a local voter, said he believes Lawrence has a real opportunity to defeat Barrett in November.
Barrett must defend his seat against a challenger who has built a disciplined organizing operation while also appealing to independent voters skeptical of Lawrence's platform. Lawrence, for his part, must expand beyond his progressive base to win a district that neither party has locked up.
