The mechanism is intricate but elegant: Ethena mints USDe by taking liquid staking tokens (LSTs), primarily Ethereum-based, as collateral. To maintain the dollar peg and achieve delta-neutrality, Ethena simultaneously opens short positions of equivalent notional value on perpetual futures markets across various centralized exchanges. If a user deposits $1,000 worth of staked Ethereum (stETH), Ethena mints 1,000 USDe and opens a $1,000 short position on ETH perpetuals. This delta-neutral strategy means the portfolio's net exposure to ETH price movements is zero: a rise in ETH price increases the LST collateral value but decreases the value of the short position by a similar amount, and vice versa.
The internet bond aspect, and the source of USDe's yield, comes from two primary components. First, the LST collateral itself generates staking rewards from the underlying Ethereum network.
