The U.S. June Core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index rose 0.1 percent month-over-month, falling below the 0.2 percent estimate. This key inflation metric—the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge—signals a faster deceleration in underlying price pressures than many analysts predicted. The broader PCE Price Index fell 0.1 percent monthly, aligning with forecasts, while the annual rate held steady at 3.7 percent.
This softer core inflation print strengthens the case for the Fed to cut rates earlier in the cycle. High interest rates have compressed valuations across the technology sector, particularly for companies with long-duration growth profiles. A policy shift would reduce borrowing costs, improve future earnings outlooks and expand price-to-earnings multiples for growth leaders.
Microsoft, trading at $390.54, and Apple, at $338.19, are the clearest near-term beneficiaries. Both are sensitive to rate expectations given their strong cash flows and consistent growth. Lower discount rates increase the present value of projected earnings, making current valuations more compelling. Watch for institutional buying in these names as rate expectations firm up.
Nvidia, at $190.01, and Alphabet, at $336.71, are also well-positioned. Nvidia's AI dominance and Alphabet's cloud and advertising segments thrive when capital is accessible and the economy is expanding. The market is underpricing the upside for both as Fed easing becomes more concrete. Tesla, at $298.32, could see renewed interest given its capital-intensive growth plans.
The Nasdaq fell 1.7 percent to 24,443 and the S&P 500 dropped 1.5 percent to 7,316 on the day, but the underlying inflation trend remains a tailwind for growth equities. The next critical data point is the July Consumer Price Index report, due Aug. 14, which will either confirm or complicate the disinflationary case ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee's September meeting.
